How to Delete a Discord Account Permanently (Desktop and Mobile)

Ready to leave Discord for good? This guide shows you how to delete your Discord account step by step. You can do it from the desktop app, a web browser, or the mobile app on iPhone and Android, and the process takes a few minutes.

Before you delete your Discord account, there are two things to sort out. Discord won’t let you delete an account that still owns servers, and the deletion isn’t instant: your account sits in a “pending deletion” state for 15 days before it’s gone permanently. We cover both below, along with what happens to your messages afterward.

If you only want a break, you may not need to delete anything. Discord also lets you disable your account, which keeps your servers and friends for when you come back.

Before You Delete: A Quick Checklist

Run through this list first so nothing blocks the process or catches you by surprise.

  • Transfer or delete the servers you own. Discord blocks deletion until you do. The new owner must already be a member of the server.
  • Download your data if you want a copy. Go to User Settings → Data & Privacy → Request Data. Discord emails a download link within 30 days. If you delete or disable your account before the link arrives, the request is cancelled, so wait for it first.
  • Check your Nitro or Server Boosts. Discord says these subscriptions are cancelled when you delete your account. If you bought Nitro through the App Store or Google Play, check your phone’s subscription settings too, so the store doesn’t keep billing you.
  • Have your login ready. You need your password, plus your 2FA code if you use multi-factor authentication.

How to transfer server ownership

On desktop or browser:

  1. Open the server and go to the member list.
  2. Right-click the member who should become the new owner.
  3. Select Transfer Ownership.
  4. Turn on the acknowledgement toggle and click Transfer Ownership.
  5. Enter your 2FA code if asked.

On mobile:

  1. Open the server and tap Server Settings.
  2. Tap Members, then the member you want.
  3. Select Transfer Ownership, confirm, and tap Transfer.

If nobody should take over a server, you can delete the server instead from its Server Settings.

Delete, Disable or Uninstall: Which One Do You Need?

These three options do very different things.

OptionWhat happens to your accountServers and friendsCan you undo it?
Delete your accountPending deletion for 15 days, then permanently deletedYou lose access; your messages stay but show as “Deleted User”Only within the 15-day window
Disable your accountPut on hold; no @mention emailsKept for when you returnYes, any time by logging in
Uninstall the appNothing changesKeptYes, just reinstall

In short, uninstalling only removes Discord from your device. Disabling is a pause button. Deleting is the only option that actually removes your Discord account.

How to Delete Your Discord Account on Desktop or Browser

  1. Open Discord and click the gear icon next to your username in the bottom-left corner to open User Settings.
  2. Make sure the My Account tab is selected.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click Delete Account.
  4. If you still own servers, Discord stops you here. Transfer or delete them, then come back to My Account and click Delete Account again.
  5. Enter your password and your 2FA code if you use one.
  6. Click Delete Account in the confirmation window.

That’s it. Your account now enters the 15-day pending deletion period.

How to Delete Your Discord Account on Mobile

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android:

  1. Tap your profile avatar in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Tap the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.
  5. If you own servers, transfer or delete them first, then return to Settings → Account and tap Delete Account again.
  6. Enter your password and 2FA code if needed, then tap Okay.

If you’re doing this on public Wi-Fi at a café or airport, your password travels over a network you don’t control. A VPN encrypts your internet connection, so other people on the same network can’t read what you send. You can check what your connection currently reveals with the IP check tool.

What Happens After You Delete Your Discord Account

Here’s what Discord says happens once you confirm:

  • You lose access right away. Your servers, direct messages, group chats and purchases are no longer available to you.
  • Your account is anonymized. Your username is replaced, and your past messages stay in servers and DMs under a “Deleted User” name.
  • Your servers keep running. Any server you transferred stays active under its new owner.
  • No notifications. You won’t get notifications or friend requests while the account is pending deletion.
  • After 15 days, it’s permanent. Once the pending period ends, the deletion can’t be undone.

How to cancel a Discord account deletion

Changed your mind? Log back in within 15 days and restore your account. That cancels the deletion. After the 15 days, Discord can’t recover it.

One exception: accounts that Discord itself removed because of a ban or another enforcement action can’t be restored this way. In that case, you can only send an appeal to Discord’s Trust & Safety team.

How to delete your messages first

Deleting your account doesn’t erase what you’ve posted. If you want specific messages gone, delete them manually before you remove the account. Hover over a message (or long-press it on mobile), open the menu and choose Delete Message. Once the account is anonymized, you can’t go back and remove them yourself.

Want a Break Instead? How to Disable Your Discord Account

Disabling keeps everything in place while you step away:

  1. Open User Settings → My Account (on mobile, Settings → Account).
  2. Under Account Removal, select Disable Account.
  3. Follow the prompts.

To come back, log in with your email and password and select Restore Account. Discord notes that a disabled account inactive for two years or more may be deleted, so log in now and then if you want to keep it. Disabling does not cancel a subscription, so cancel Nitro separately in User Settings → Subscriptions if you’re pausing for a while.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for a Discord account to be permanently deleted?

Your account stays in a “pending deletion” state for 15 days after you confirm. After that, Discord deletes it permanently and it can’t be restored. So deletion isn’t instant, and you can’t skip the waiting period from the app.

Do I need to transfer or delete my servers before deleting my account?

Yes. Discord won’t let you delete an account that still owns servers. Transfer ownership to another member, or delete the servers you no longer need, then start the deletion again.

What happens to my messages when I delete my Discord account?

They stay where you posted them. Discord anonymizes your account, so your messages show under “Deleted User” instead of your username. If you want certain messages removed, delete them yourself before deleting the account.

Will my friends know if I delete my Discord account?

Discord doesn’t send them a notification. They’ll notice, though: you’ll disappear from their friend list, and your profile and old messages will show as “Deleted User.”

How do I delete my Discord account if I can’t log in?

Try to get back in first. Use Forgot your password? on the login screen to reset your password through your email. If your account was hacked or you still can’t access it, contact the Discord Support Team. Deletion requires your password, so support is the only route when you’re locked out.

How do I delete a Discord account that’s disabled?

Log in with your email and password, and select Restore Account when Discord tells you the account is disabled. Then go to User Settings → My Account and follow the deletion steps above.

Does Discord delete inactive accounts?

Discord says disabled accounts that stay inactive for two years or more may be deleted. If you want to keep a disabled account, log in to reactivate it. You can disable it again afterward.

Should I disable or delete my Discord account?

Disable it if you might come back, since your servers, friends and messages stay intact. Delete it if you’re done with Discord for good and want your username and profile removed. If you’re not sure, disable first: you can always delete later.
