Can You Have Multiple Instagram Accounts?

Yes. Instagram lets you stay signed in to five accounts at once and switch between them without logging out. Instagram doesn’t publish a limit on how many accounts you can create in total — only on how many fit in the app at the same time. The part most people miss is what happens behind the scenes: Meta can connect your accounts even when they look completely separate to everyone else.

Five accounts, signed in at once

Instagram’s help page on adding accounts says you can add and switch between up to five accounts without logging out and back in.

That’s a limit on the switcher, not on you. Nothing in Instagram’s rules says you may only ever own five accounts. If you need a sixth, you log out of one and log in to another — slower, but allowed.

Five is usually plenty. A personal account, a work account, one for the dog and a side project still leaves room.

How to add and switch

Adding an account takes about a minute:

1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
2. Tap your profile name at the top of the screen — or open the menu and go to Settings and privacy.
3. Choose Add account.
4. Pick Log into existing account or Create new account.

If you create a new one from inside the app, Instagram walks you through Meta’s Accounts Centre. You can either use your existing login or set a separate password for the new account. That choice matters more than it looks — more on that below.

To switch, press and hold your profile picture in the bottom-right corner. A list of your added accounts appears, and you tap the one you want. You can also tap your profile name at the top of your profile and pick from there.

Notifications arrive for every account you’re signed in to. That’s handy for a business account and exhausting for five, so check your notification settings once you’ve added them all.

Personal, creator or business — mix them freely

Account type is set per account. One can be personal, another a creator account, a third a business account. They don’t have to match.

Personal accounts are the plain version: no analytics, no contact buttons, no professional tools.

Creator accounts are built for people — influencers, artists, writers. You get insights on your posts and followers, the full music library, and access to monetisation features like subscriptions and gifts where they’re available.

The Accounts Centre is the bit that surprises people

Your Accounts Centre is where Meta manages your Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Messenger accounts as one set. Meta announced in April 2026 that Accounts Centre is being upgraded to a “Meta Account” over the following year, so the name in your settings may be changing.

Once two accounts sit in the same Accounts Centre, things get shared. Personal details, passwords and security settings live in one place. Ad preferences can be applied across both. You can use the login from one app to get into the other.

None of that is announced to your followers. But your accounts are connected in Meta’s systems, even if the profiles look unrelated in public. Threads makes this obvious — it runs on your Instagram login, and your Instagram username carries over.

You do have control. Meta lets you manage which accounts sit in your Accounts Centre and remove ones you’d rather keep out, and you can use separate Meta Accounts for different apps.

So if you want a private account kept away from your work profile, decide that when you create it. Pick a separate password instead of continuing with your existing login.

Just be honest about the limit. Separate logins keep accounts apart in your settings. They don’t erase everything else Meta can see.

What Instagram’s rules actually allow

Having several accounts is fine. The app is built for it.

What Meta’s Community Standards prohibit is different: fake accounts, impersonating someone else, and misrepresenting who you are. Also banned are networks of accounts used to boost your own reach, likes or follower counts artificially — Meta calls this inauthentic behaviour and enforces against it.

Instagram’s terms also say you can’t try to create accounts in unauthorised ways. That’s aimed at bulk and automated account creation, not at you making a second profile for your ceramics.

The rule people trip over is ban evasion. Making a new account to get around an account that Meta removed is itself a violation.

If one account goes, the others can go too

This is the risk of linked accounts, and it’s worth reading twice.

Meta’s Account Integrity policy says it restricts or removes accounts that are owned by the same person or entity as an account that has been disabled. It says the same about accounts created or repurposed to evade a previous removal, “including those assessed to have common ownership”.

Meta’s Transparency Centre explains the wider process: repeated violations lead to restrictions, and after five strikes an account may be removed. Severe violations can disable an account the first time.

So if your main account breaks the rules badly enough to be disabled, your second account isn’t automatically safe. Keep every account you own on the right side of the rules, not just the one you care about most.

What a VPN does and doesn’t do here

Can I stop two of my accounts being connected?
